And Now...Mark Twain!

The public is invited to BCC Attleboro’s second floor auditorium to enjoy one of America ’s best-loved writers and humorists. A solo performance on Mark Twain, by actor Richard Clark, will encompass a compendium of his life & works; laugh along with him at the foibles, follies and fantasies of a bygone era. Admission is free.  ”A delightful look at the life and work of America’s foremost humorist. This one-person play is full of wit and wisdom and the special brand of storytelling that made him a legend in his time.

Paint the Fence Family Day

Location: Attleboro Public Library-74 North Main St., Attleboro, MA 02703

This, our kickoff event, is in honor of International Literacy Day and the Saturday reopening of the Attleboro Public Library.  The Library, along with the Farmer's Market, the Attleboro Youth Commission, the Y, The Literacy Center, Rotary Club of Attleboro and volunteers will recruit individuals to paint the picket fence set up at the Library. Barter to paint: bring canned goods for local soup kitchens. Family fun: board and action games from Tom's time, Twain readings, children's book giveaway, discussion of the book with Big Read info.

Twain & Technology: Telling Your Story in the 21st Century

Location: Attleboro Public Library/Double ACS ( Local Cable Access)

Big Read author Mark Twain had such a way with words that he was one of the biggest celebrities of his time.  One hundred years later, here is your chance to tell a modern day tale you can watch or download.  Middle School students will learn to tell their own story using their original ideas in combination with the technology available through Attleboro 's local cable station, Double ACS.  Space is limited so children entering grades 5-8 must register by calling the Library.  Participants must be able to come to all six sessions.  Sessions will be held at the Library and at Double ACS.

The Other Side of the Fence

Location:  Attleboro Arts  Museum - 86 Park Street, Attleboro, MA 02703

"The Other Side of the Fence" is an exhibition of creatively painted fence sections by local artists on behalf of over 30 community organizations in Attleboro. Artists work will symbolize segments of the greater  Attleboro community producing a virtual neighborhood. Poet Jamele Adams, Associate  Dean of Student Life of Brandeis University will put his spin on Tom, Huck and companions in an original performance.

They Called Me Lizzy from Slavery to the White House

One woman play, produced by East Haddam Stage Co., tells the story of an African American seamstress, Elizabeth Keckley and her rise from slavery to entrepreneurial freedom, then scandal and decline. Stephanie Jackson becomes Elizabeth Keckley, dressmaker and confidante of Mary Todd Lincoln and author of "Behind the Scenes: 30 years as a Slave and Four Years in the White House." A depiction of slavery from the time of Samuel Clemens. $10 admission

Digital Scrapbooking for the Too Busy Scrap- booker Discussion

Location: Attleboro Public Library - 74 North Main Street , Attleboro ,  MA  02703

Mark Twain was full of good ideas, but his only successful invention was the self-pasting scrapbook. Twain scrap-booked his many and varied adventures and quickly grew frustrated with the mess and supplies required and so the self-pasting scrapbook was born. Today’s scrap-bookers are no different. Family and friends are so much fun, you don't want to forget a minute of the times you share. If you love the idea of scrapbooking, but not the thought of all that paper and glue, then maybe digital scrapbooking is for you. Local scrap-booker Laurie Siddall will share her tips for using the computer to create beautiful page spreads, calendars, holiday cards and even books as personal and detailed as traditional pages.

Discovery Day at Attleboro Springs Wildlife Sanctuary

Location: Attleboro Springs Wildlife Sanctuary - La Salette Shrine, 947 Park St. , Attleboro, MA  02703

Help celebrate the first anniversary of this new sanctuary and the grand opening of the new Reflection Trail. The sights, sounds, smells, and feel of nature are much the same today as they were in Tom Sawyer’s time. The staff and volunteers of Mass Audubon partners with The Big Read/Attleboro’s 1ABC to offer naturalist guided activities. Animals, frog calling contest, children's crafts and traditional games in the field make this a fun filled day for all. Bring your family and friends—everyone gets in free! Raising Children in an Overabundant, Overstimulated World

Nancy Carlsson-Paige is Professor Emerita at Lesley University where she taught teachers for more than 30 years and was a founder of the University’s Center for Peaceable Schools. Nancy has written and spoken extensively about the societal forces impacting childhood today including media, marketing, academic pressure, and our fast paced lives, and how these forces affect children’s healthy development. She is the author and co-author of five books and has written numerous articles on media violence, conflict resolution, and peaceable classrooms. Her most recent book is called Taking Back Childhood. Triboro Youth Theatre’s middle school students bring Mark Twain's classic story to exuberant musical life in this Broadway adaptation of America 's favorite book. THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER is the irresistible story of a fourteen-year-old boy growing up in the heartland of America . In the course of the story, Tom matches wits with his stern Aunt Polly, falls in love with the beautiful, feisty Becky Thatcher, and goes on the adventure of his life with Becky and that irresistible renegade, Huckleberry Finn. Children's Writing Workshop: the Mystery of the Trunk

Location: Women at Work Museum, Attleboro , MA 02703

Utilizing a trunk with some Twain memorabilia as inspiration, writers will tap their inner "twain" to creatively write their own stories. The workshop will help each child participant find their creativity, develop confidence, and believe in their writing abilities through mind-mapping, games, drawings and writings. Appropriate for children 10 years of age through teens.
